Are construction workers in demand in Rockhampton?

Yes. Our population growth is driving demand for new builds, particularly new homes, creating job opportunities across the region. There is strong demand for workers across a range of trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, bricklaying, labouring, landscaping, painting and more. Electricians and labourers are among the top 10 occupations currently being recruited in the Rockhampton Region.

In the 2025/26 financial year, Rockhampton Regional Council approved the highest number of new homes in more than a decade and there is still plenty of development happening in high-growth areas including Parkhurst and Gracemere.

With more people and homes comes more business opportunities, driving demand for commercial buildings, warehouses and community infrastructure. Together, these create strong employment opportunities for apprentices, qualified tradespeople and experienced managers in the construction industry.

What qualifications do you need to work in construction?

The specific training and qualifications you’ll need to work in construction depend on the exact career pathway and job you wish to pursue. Many people start their career through an apprenticeship or traineeship which allows you to earn an income while gaining the practical skills and recognised qualifications you’ll need to climb the ladder.

Anyone working on a construction site in Queensland needs a Construction Induction Card, or a White Card as its commonly referred to. White Cards certify that you have undergone essential workplace health and safety training. North Rockhampton State High School and Mount Morgan State High School are registered to provide White Cards, as are CQUniversity, Forky Stick Training and Safety Consultants, New Horizons Safety and Training Services and Occupational Skills Centre Australia.

Other common tickets (an industry term to describe licences and certifications) include Working at Heights, Forklift Licences (FL), Scaffolding Licence, Heavy Vehicle Licence, and Plant Operator Tickets, but ultimately these will be determined by the job you’re working towards.

Not all construction jobs are necessarily ‘on the tools’ with careers in contract administration, estimating, drafting, and health and safety also pathways worth considering.
