Temperatures are starting to climb and summer is just around the corner, but there are plenty of ways to keep cool and beat the heat across the Rockhampton Region.

With pools, refreshments and treats, and indoor activities, here are some of the top ways to keep cool.

Make a splash

Summer and swimming go hand in hand, and we’re spoilt for choice when it’s time to dive in. In Rockhampton you’ll find 50m and 25m pools and a large water play area at the Southside Pool, and a 50m pool, wading pool and waterslides at the Northside Pool. Gracemere and Mount Morgan also have 25m pools, and best of all entry to any of these sites will cost just $3.

If you’ve got cooped up kids needing to burn off some energy, then the region’s free water play areas are another fantastic option. You’ll find these in Kershaw Gardens, the Riverside Precinct and Cedric Archer Park in Gracemere.

Head for higher ground

Heading for a walk in the heat may not sound like a summer activity, but did you know the summit of Mount Archer can be up to 5 degrees cooler than the rest of Rockhampton?

You may choose to start or end your day with a hike up or down part of the Zamia Walk, take in breathtaking views from Nurim Circuit, enjoy a picnic at the amphitheatre overlooking Rockhampton, or take the kids up to the adventure playground.

Chill out indoors

If you’d prefer to be indoors, there are a range of activities and attractions to keep you cool.

Experience history and culture at the Rockhampton Museum of Art, Archer Park Rail Museum, Walter Reid Cultural Centre or Mount Morgan Railway Museum. You could also check out a live performance at the Pilbeam Theatre, or lose yourself in a good book at one of our local libraries.

Kids activities include Timezone, Funzone, Ten Pin Bowling & Putt Putt Golf, or catching the latest flick at Event Cinemas.

Now is also a great time to beat the heat and December rush by getting ahead on your Christmas shopping at one of our many air-conditioned shopping centres. Remember that you can continue to support our smaller local businesses in Rockhampton’s CBD and Mount Morgan from the comfort of undercover and shaded footpaths.

Enjoy summer safely

However you enjoy the region during the warmer months, remember sun safety should always be a priority. Checking the UV ratings before heading outside will help you determine the times of day when sun protection is required, and when it might be best to stick to activities under shade or indoors.

Making the most of summer

We’re fortunate to enjoy 300 days of sunshine annually in the Rockhampton Region. Summer may turn up the heat for a small period of the year, but there are countless ways to stay comfortable, keep exploring, and continue enjoying all the region has to offer.
