We all know how tough it can be getting back into the ‘daily grind’ after school holidays and a long weekend, but it doesn’t take much to make every day feel like a holiday in Rockhampton.

There is so much to see and do in our backyard right throughout the year, so why not take the time to rediscover some of those hidden spots and long-forgotten favourites.

We often talk about the big attractions with visitors – Rockhampton Zoo, Mount Archer, Kershaw Gardens – and while they’re certainly the key selling points for our Region, they are just the tip of the iceberg.

Culture and history

Let’s not forget the Rockhampton Museum of Art for a start. Every day you’ll probably see this spectacular building from the Fitzroy River Bridge, but did you know it is the largest gallery in Regional Queensland with more than 3,000 pieces? Entry is free and the exhibitions change regularly, so if you haven’t paid a visit recently then it’s a perfect way to fill a gap in your weekend.

Rockhampton Heritage Village is another affordable activity the whole family can enjoy, taking you into our city’s past with original buildings and self-guided tours to help you make the most of your visit.

Mount Morgan

When was the last time you visited Mount Morgan?

For living history, a visit to Mount Morgan can’t be missed. Heritage Minerals has just reached a significant milestone at the old gold mine which will see the first gold poured from the site mid-next year. It’s created a real buzz in the town, particularly for the diverse range of local businesses.

Additionally, the Mount Morgan Buy Local campaign is underway from October 13 to December 17, giving you the chance to win a share of thousands of dollars’ worth of prize vouchers – simply by spending $20 at a participating business.

Make a day of your visit with a picnic on the picturesque banks of No 7 Dam.

Parks, Playgrounds and Pools

While those activities will sort out your weekend, we can’t forget the 130+ parks and playgrounds across the region which are the perfect way to start or end your day. On our Parks & Playgrounds page you’ll find information on some of the Region’s most popular – Kershaw Gardens, Rockhampton Botanic Gardens, Dinosaur Park, Cedric Archer Park – and a directory to help you rediscover the open spaces in your neighbourhood.

With temperatures heating up, it’s also the ideal time to make a splash at our pools on the northside, southside, Gracemere and Mount Morgan, beat the heat at one of our water play areas, or cast a line from the banks of the Fitzroy, No 7 Dam or head offshore via Rockhampton’s latest launching facility at the Casuarina Creek Boat Ramp.

These are just a taste of the everyday luxuries we get to enjoy in the Rockhampton Region. As you go about your business this week, make a conscious effort to take in your surroundings and think of some of those activities and places you haven’t explored in a while, so you can make every day feel like a holiday in Rockhampton.
