Looking to move to Rockhampton and wondering what life could really be like? There can be a lot of misconceptions around living in a regional area, however the reality may surprise you.
Rockhampton offers the best of both worlds – a welcoming community and relaxed lifestyle, combined with strong career pathways and the convenience of modern services and amenities.
Whether you’re considering a tree-change or looking for a truly rewarding career, let’s take a closer look at some of the common myths around living in a regional area and explore what life is really like in the Rockhampton Region.
Distance and isolation
Perhaps the biggest misconception is that Rockhampton is too small and too far from Brisbane. Let’s be clear – Rocky is a thriving regional city, not an ‘outback’ town. Our region is home to more than 85,000 people. We have multiple shopping centres, more than two dozen schools, a world-class university, a handful of hospitals and a public transport network.
Rockhampton Airport is serviced by both QantasLink and Virgin Australia and take around an hour to fly to Brisbane. We have 5G mobile coverage, nbn internet and all the TV channels you’re used to in a capital.
Socialising and activities
With dozens of sporting codes, more than 100 parks, plenty of nightlife activities, an extensive calendar of major events throughout the year, and easy weekend road-trips, life in Rockhampton is never boring.
Rockhampton is a multicultural region too, so you can move here and continue to practice your faith or connect with like-minded people. Of course, moving somewhere new can always be a bit daunting, which is why we’ve prepared a blog with plenty of ideas to help you find your community here.
Weather
Rockhampton has a sub-tropical climate, so there’s no escaping the fact that our summers are generally more humid than southern parts of Australia. If you ask us, that’s a small trade-off for the 300 days of sunshine we enjoy each year, and perfect winter temperatures averaging 23 degrees.
Despite that, Rockhampton is still far enough south to avoid most of the severe storms which can impact northern parts of the country, and our community is well prepared to respond to any weather events.
Eating out (and coffee!)
We know just how important good coffee is and don’t worry – Rockhampton has dozens of cafes so you’re sure to find a place near work to get your morning caffeine hit. We also have plenty of variety when it comes to eating out, with businesses serving everything from fine dining to fast food.
As you’d expect, you can take your tastebuds on a world tour with restaurants providing Nepalese, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese and Italian cuisine (to name a few) as well as sports clubs, bistros and classic pubs.
Career opportunities
Rockhampton’s economy is booming, with Gross Regional Product hitting a record high in FY24-25 and jumping 4.3% in 12 months. That’s the largest increase since 2012 and comes as thousands of new jobs are expected to be created over the next few years.
The Regional Australia Institute has also founded that workers in hospitality, childcare, healthcare, retail, transport, construction and agriculture often have higher median incomes in regional areas than in a capital city.
