Explore the Fitzroy River with River Cruises CQ
Published on 03 August 2019
The Fitzroy River is an iconic part of the Rockhampton landscape. Its popularity as one of the best fisheries on the East Coast only continues to grow, and this increase has led to the introduction of some exciting new services.
River Cruises CQ - operated by owner Craig Robertson - has proven popular. The business has accrued over 900 likes on Facebook, and provides both locals and visitors to the region with the opportunity to experience the Fitzroy from a unique perspective, especially for those who don’t have access to their own boat.
Judy, recently got the opportunity to go on one of these fantastic cruises. We caught up with her to discuss her experience:
Can you tell us a little bit about your river cruise experience?
We met at the boat ramp on North-Side near the Callaghan Park Raceway, just before 5pm, and were welcomed aboard by Craig, the Skipper and his son, and were given a safety briefing. The boat has a capacity of 10 people, and we had 5, so there was plenty of room to spread out. We were treated to a platter of delicious finger foods and choice of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Where did you go during your trip, and what were the highlights?
We travelled up towards the old bridge while being given a brief history of the river, the port, and the establishment of Rockhampton in the 1850’s. It was very special to see Quay Street and the historic buildings from the river. From there we swung around and headed towards the mouth of the Fitzroy, approximately 40km from Rockhampton. The cruise also took us past the end of Quay Street, and Gavial Creek, just rounding the corner towards Lakes Creek. After this we finished up and headed back to the boat ramp.
What kind of wildlife did you see?
As we travelled quietly past the myriad of boats moored on the river we sighted a variety of water birds and an occasional fish jumping out of the water. There was also an opportunity to spot a crocodile nest, but with the tide being high we missed seeing an actual crocodile. Maybe next time!
Overall, did you enjoy your time on the tour?
It was a special treat – even as a local. It was a very enjoyable trip that was definitely enjoyed by all on board!
